Popluar types of Marine Research
Are you interested in the realm of marine research? If so, then you probably already realize just how vast and expansive this area of science really is, and how two people in the same industry can be studying two completely different things. While there are thousands of scientists all over the world that are trying to help us gain a better understanding of the seas, there are many areas that they focus on. Below is a short list of just a few of the most popular types of marine research.
The first and most well-known area of marine research is the one in which scientists are actually out in the field (or in this case, in the water) getting the raw data and information that starts the whole research process. These kinds of scientists use a wide variety of tools and instruments as they go down into the ocean to find out more about it. They record the information in computer systems, and then their information is sent off to their partners in a laboratory or university. This is the realm where everyone wants to be, since it’s usually more fun to be swimming around the ocean than sitting in a boring lab somewhere!
Not everyone is so bored back in the lab, though. The next area of marine research is the processing department, which is a team of scientists that work in a separate university or building away from the water. They receive the information that is given to them by the folks out in the field, and they try to use that data to make conclusions and discoveries about our oceans. These people enjoy working with numbers and information, and love figuring out the solution to a problem. Even though they’re not out in the ocean swimming with the fish, they still play a large part in discovering new things.
It should be noted that, regardless of where a marine research scientist works, he will usually only be studying one of two parts in the ocean. The first area in marine research is the actual ocean itself, or in other words, its structure, landscaping, and other information about that particular body of water. These scientists help us to learn how deep the oceans are, what the water pressure is at different depths, and how all of the oceans work together, among many other things.
A scientist may also be studying the life that is found within our oceans, focusing mainly on all the types of fish, animals, and plant life that is found in the seas. He will observe the ways that all the different life forms work and interact with each other in the oceans. This type of research helps us to learn what kinds of plants are in the ocean, what all the different kinds of fish are, and what kind of weird creatures live in the really deep parts of the sea — you’d be surprised at just how unbelievable life is all the way down there!
